Ngangan explains why Solicitors office was locked

Finance Secretary, Dr Ken Ngangan, appeared before Deputy Chief Justice, Sir Gibbs Salika, at the National Courts today to explain why the Public Solicitor’s office had been locked.

Sir Gibbs explained to him that he was summoned under Section 225 of the Constitution that holds the Government accountable in ensuring that constitutional officers are resourced and functioning.

Finance Secretary, Dr Ken Ngangan, had to explain in court the irregularities that led to the closure of the Public Solicitors office. He said the office had been opened on Thursday last week and part payments on the outstanding rentals had been paid.

The Deputy Chief Justice reminded the Finance Secretary of the important service the public solicitor provides.

He said the public solicitor office is a constitutional office set up by the Government so that citizens that cannot afford private legal assistance, can get free legal assistance from the public solicitor.

Sir Gibbs asked that the Finance Secretary and his office to be in constant contact with landlords to ensure there is mutual understanding.

Public Solicitor, Jimmy Tamate, was also present at the hearing and speaking along with Finance secretary, Ken Ngangan.
