The National General Elections are quickly approaching in less than 20 days. Today, there were more concerns for security.
Deputy Opposition Leader, Sam Basil has called on the PNGDF, Customs and Police to hold back on releasing guns being kept at Lae’s Igam barracks.
“I am calling on the three men to think about the security of Papua New Guinea,” said Basil.
The guns were impounded in October last year.
There were allegations that the guns were brought into the country with proper paper work.
It brought to light the possibility of a gun smuggling ring.
Today the Police Commissioner explained that the guns belong to the Police.
“I am donating 50 of these weapons to the Joint Services College,” said Commissioner Baki.
The rest will be slowly released to divisions during the election when there are requests.
Papua New Guinea has had serious gun problems during past elections with political factions, and have received international attention.
