Morobe Governor, Kelly Naru, is appealing to the Health Minister, Michael Malabag, and the National Health Department to give immediate attention to the difficulties the cancer unit at Angau hospital is facing.
Naru said the difficulties at the PNG cancer facility is an ongoing problem that needs the urgent attention from the National Government.
Naru says the problem facing Angau is not only to do with drugs but also medical officers, doctors and equipment are also needed.
Naru added, the cancer unit will need a concerted effort from both the national and provincial governments including stakeholders.
However, the Morobe Provincial Government is willing to support where it can to manage this problem.
Last Monday Deputy Opposition leader, Sam Basil, raised similar sentiments.
Basil also made a call to the national government to look not only at the cancer unit but other health issues that are affecting the country.
Basil’s response came after a patient, Winnie Solien, had decided to seek medical treatment overseas after she could not undergo radiotherapy treatment.
Currently there is no oncologist at the facility. The last oncologist had left in December last year.
Radiation Oncology Registrar, Dr. David Kundi in an interview last week confirmed that the Cancer unit urgently needs an oncologist, and CT scanners to help patients.
