Women Inmates Celebrate Mothers Day

By Julie Badui Owa – EMTV News, Lae

More than 20 women inmates from the Buimo Prison in Lae received food items from business houses to celebrate mothers’ day which will fall on Sunday.

The program was facilitated by Lae-based Australian Federal Police.

Lorna Simon is one of the female prisoners who will celebrate mothers’ day on Sunday with her 18 month year old daughter.

Lorna Simon and her baby daughter has been living inside Buimo Prison’s female cell block for almost 2 years.

Lorna’s daughter was born at the prison when Lorna was sentenced to 11-years for murder in 2016.

According to the court’s decision, she will only serve 6 years and 8 months.

Lorna says it was not easy bringing up a child in prison. She has called on other women to stay away from crime to avoid such challenges.

There are currently three mothers with their babies living at the Buimo Prison.

Buimo CS Manager for Administration, Superintendent Judy Tara, says most of the women prisoners at Buimo have been convicted for family domestic violence.

Tara says women prisoners with babies face a lot of challenges living with their inmates in the same cell block.

Today, the Buimo female inmates received food items from Huon Gulf Hotel and Prima Small Goods to celebrate mothers’ day on Sunday.

Some did presentations today for their mothers.

Four other prisoners from the male cell block also joined in on the celebration.

The inmates wishes all mothers good health and a Happy Mother’s Day.
