NCD – Central ACP Anthony Wagambie Jnr has released a statement regarding the incident in the Port Moresby North-East area of Erima.

“I apologize to the people of Port Moresby and Central province for the incident that happened yesterday evening and this morning where disgruntled relatives of two deceased men came out at the Erima and blocked off the road. Last night a couple of years innocent travelling public had their vehicles damaged by missiles, one vehicle overturned when the driver tried to do a U Turn when seeing the melee ahead.”

Last night’s event which ended up with two confirmed dead and a number of others injured caused fear among city residents and the travelling public.

The situation has been contained now with Police presence.

In a further update, Wagambie says that a handful of Police officers also received injuries and reports damaged police vehicles.

“A young Constable was hit in the head with a brick.”

A Gordon’s Police vehicle has been extensively damaged and almost burnt. This will affect the community from Gordon’s, 9 Mile and Bomana.

Currently a full investigation has commenced.

I want to see that it is a full investigation starting from what happened when Police went into Erima initially to the shooting.

Wagambie jnr is calling on individuals who are not direct witnesses to ease speculation on social media. We need to allow investigations to be run independently without any undue influence.

I call on the community at Erima to allow normalcy to be brought back. Let us respect each other.

Wagambie Jnr adds that police in NCD are faced with a lot of challenges with the high number of unemployed people flooding in from other provinces and adds that this needs to be controlled.
