The University of Papua New Guinea today held it yearly orientation of First year Students.
The Secretary for Department of Higher Education Research and Sciences, Father Jan Czuba attended the orientation along with UPNG Board Council members and UPNG Academic staff.
There are Over 1200 first year students registering this year.
Students were encouraged to remain committed to Academic Excellence throughout there 4 years at the University.
During orientation there were issue raised, there were two separate list published in the daily newspaper for the accepted students. One list done by the OHE online selection and the other by UPNG manual selection, some students selected by OHE were not selected by UPNG.
The Online Selection Malaibe said had only two requirements, 1. Quota of the School and 2. Academic performance. While UPNG had one more requirement, being that the student selected UPNG on their school leaver form.
Acting Vice Chancellor Vincent Malaibe said there manual selection was to ensure a check and balance system and he will be meeting all the deans for each school to see what they can do.
David Kuma is one of the parents of a student affected. His Son, Sweden Kuma, finished form Port Moresby National High and his father said that he applied to UPNG School of Business. His name appeared on the OHE UPNG acceptance list but not on UPNG Final list.
Another issue was boarding, Acting Vice Chancellor said the university will be using a new registration system and boarding will be offered on a first comer first serve basis, regardless of whether or not you are on the TESAS scholarship.
