Trukai Fun Run Enjoys Mass Turnout

The first ever Trukai Fun Run held in the Central Province was a great success.

The event was initially arranged for the children of Makerupu Village in the Rigo District; however, the excitement and anticipation was carried on to surrounding villages.

Scott Vavine from the PNG Sports Foundation and Chairman of Makerupu Primary School described the event as the start of a much greater movement to get more villages and communities involved in sport.

A phenomenal crowd it was indeed for the very first Trukai Run held outside of the NCD.

Sponsors and villagers of Makerupu had initially catered for 500 participants but, by starting time, had garnered interest far and wide.

Villages around the Rigo District had participants multiplying by the minute.

Secretary General of the PNG Olympic Committee, Auvita Rapilla, confirmed this was the first time for a village in the Central Province to participate in the Trukai Fun Run.

This ‘Sport for All’ event also unearthed some untapped talent.

Rapilla reaffirms, “it is good to see the Fun Run extended to the village communities to be part of this nation-wide event”.

Initiatives such as this one not only promote the charisma of rural villages, but promote the message that all sporting bodies carry: unity and prosperity.

It is hoped that next year’s Fun Run in Makerupu will include sponsored shirts for Hula and the presence of Trukai to continue the growth of the Fun Run in the outskirts of Port Moresby.
