Minister for Forests, and Member for Kiriwina Goodenough, Douglas Tomuriesa, made his first official visit to his home province, in Milne Bay as the new Forest Minister.
His visit was organized by the PNG Forest Authority, primarily to familiarize the minister with the many projects involved in the Forest Department.
Amongst the places he visited was the nation’s biggest sawmill, the Saban Enterprise Sawmill at Ulabo in Alotau. This sawmill produces 3,500 to 4 000 cm3 a month, with an annual capacity of about 50 000 cm3 of plywood.
The Deputy Governor for Milne Bay, and Chairman for Provincial Forrest Management Committee, Wilfred Giarua, was also present for the visit.
The minister was given a personal tour of the sawmill by Saban Sawill’s manager Dick Huong. The minister was unable to visit other project sites due to his other commitments back in Port Moresby.
Meantime, PNG Forest Authority is planning on seeking autonomy from the National Government.
