A three-day intensive training workshop on Tourism and Sustainable Development Goals ended today in Port Moresby.
There were 12 participants from local tourism business and the Tourism Promotion Authority (TPA), who are members of the PNG Tourism Industry Association, were presented with certificates.
The training was facilitated by Stephen Noakes of Pacific Asia Tourism.
“This training is for the understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Noakes.
Tourism is said to be a great vehicle for the government to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. The workshop was to incorporate the SDGs into the tourism arena.
Noakes, who had run a similar workshop in Mongolia, said PNG is similar to Mongolia and we should see Tourism as an opportunity, and not a challenge.
Many of the participants are small tourism businesses such as Wellness Lodge in Port Moresby, Sepik Adventure Tours in East Sepik Province, and the Bala Guest Haus in Jiwaka Province.
Due to the importance of the SDGs, PNGTIA is looking at conducting another training workshop later this year.
