Suena Community in Morobe Launch Timber Project

Suena Community in Morobe Local Level Government of Huon Gulf District, yesterday launched a timber project by Everwin Enterprises Limited, a Malaysian logging company that began operations in November last year.

The Government granted 3 permits to the company to operate in Morobe Patrol Post.

The people were happy to see the launching with the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) signed.

This is how the people of Suena Community reacted yesterday during the launching of the second timber project by Everwin Enterprises Limited, after PNG Forests ceased operations in 1996.

Since then, Morobe LLG had difficulties accessing government services for almost 21 years despite the government’s support with DSIP and LLG grants.

The Landowners then submitted their application to the government, requesting for foreign investors to operate on their land and help bring services back to the people.

This area is administered by Huon Gulf District in Morobe Province.

Morobe LLG comprises of four tribes including Suena and Kui Buso, which are hosting the three sites of the current timber project by Everwin Enterprises.

The Managing Director for Everwin Enterprises Limited, Victor Hau, said the company will work with the community to help bring some services back to the people.

Despite the people’s ethnic differences, they have united and chose to work with the company for economic development that would help ease some of their struggles.

Everwin Enterprises will operate for three years, and the landowners will then takeover with the timber project.

With the MoA signed last year, the people are entitled to more than three benefits.
