On this episode, we bring to you highlights on cricket, Va’a, surfing, volleyball, athletics and football.
In cricket, we take a look at the Hebou PNG Barramundis United Arab Emirates tour. Last Friday, the Barras played their first One day International of the World Cricket League Championship Round 5. Unfortunately, the home side,United Arab Emirates were too strong for them. Barras fell short of the win, by a massive 82 runs.
In Va’a, the Pacific Towing Regatta race took place at Ela Beach over the weekend. The race saw three affiliated outrigger canoe clubs under PNG Canoe Association the, Konedobu Kanu Klab (3K), Port Moresby Outrigger Canoe Club (POMOCC) and Kemper Leva Club (KLC) travelling in from Babaka Village, outside of Port Moresby to participate. The event consisted of straight sprints of 250m and 500m course.
In Surfing, we take a look at the 2017 Kumul World Longboard Championship that took place in Tupira, Madang Province.
In volleyball, Gabagaba Volleyball Tournament took place last week. Volleyball may not be a seasonal sport in some Motuan villages of Central province, but the turn out and participation over the last four days of the Gabagaba Volleyball tournament is a testament of the incredible interest it holds among the locals. With a total of 42 teams participating during the four days, Gabagaba villagers as well as people from surrounding villages in Hiri Coast, Rigo East and Rigo coast, packed the venue.
To athletics, our Track and field athletes have been doing extremely well in the international scene, reaching greater heights with their performances; the likes of USA based Adrian Monagi, Rellie Kaputin, Robson Yinambe and Pacific Sprint Queen Toea Wisil.
And finally to football, Papua New Guinea well and truly buried the memory of their home game lose to Tahiti in Port Moresby by beating the Polynesian side 2-1 with a dominant performance in Papeete to claim three crucial points in the chase for a spot in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia – OFC Stage 3 final.
