SOUTHERN CROSS ASSURANCE BACKS PNG OPEN GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP
A locally owned insurance company, Southern Cross Assurance has claimed the naming right of the 2026 Papua New Guinea Open Amateur Golf Championship with K20, 000 sponsorship.
This was announced at Port Moresby Royal Golf Club (PMRGC) today ahead of the championship next month. The event will be hosted in Port Moresby from April 3rd – 6th, 2026.
Southern Cross Assurance chairman Roxon Undi said the firm has been operating for over 14 years and they doing it as an obligation to the community.
“We started this last year in Lae and everything went well so when the Golf Association asked us willing, we came onboard. It was a successful event in Lae last year,” Undi said.
“This time it is on our home turf in Port Moresby, and we wanted to part take as our social responsibility by giving back to the community and one of them is golf.
“I believe that Southern Cross coming (SCAL) on with PNG to host the National Titles is to give opportunities to our national players or rather players that participate locally. The champions around the country normally take part in this so it is a good way to showcase ourselves as a responsible cooperate organisation coming on board to support this worthy cause.”
“I believe this year would be another successful one and I urge the public to come and participate, spectate and support the event.”
He said golf is developing in the country with the help of the PNG Golf Association.
President of the PNG Golf Association, Ian Hodge thanked SCAL for the support.
“Having a partner like Southern Cross Assurance stay with us for a second year allows us to plan with confidence and elevate the standard of the tournament for all participants,” Hodge said.
The event will be competed in four divisions of Amateurs, Juniors, Seniors and veterans. The seniors will consist of ages 50-59, veterans aged 60 and above while amateur and juniors ages from 12 to 18.
The championship will tee off with all divisions competing in 36 holes before moving on to day two.
