By Vasinatta Yama – EM TV News, Mt Hagen

Mt Hagen City hosted its first ever Christmas carols by candlelight last night after 43 years of independence without a celebration.
Joseph Rokpa, an individual who sponsored the program aims to see oneness in different works of life.

Like other centres who are celebrating Christmas in different styles, Rokpa promised to sponsor the program in Mt Hagen each year.

Hundreds of city residents came together to celebrate Christmas night in the heart of Mt Hagen City. The highlight included celebrating with security guards and the less fortunate dwellers in the city; among them – sex workers, the orphans and homeless people.

This was the first time for these groups of people to be part of the Christmas spirit, where they witnessed glowing lights, carols sung by youths, creative dances including dances performed by children.

Joseph Rokpa who sponsored the Christmas program, says individuals like him who have enough wealth to celebrate Christmas, must share it with others who cannot afford to celebrate it. Rokpa who is a dedicated Christian has been feeding homeless people, security guards and sex workers every evening for the last 14 months.

Christmas which falls on the 25th of December is believed by many Christians in the world that Jesus Christ the Saviour of mankind was born on this date.

Most Christians believe that it is a time of forgiveness, togetherness, and happiness at home and with others.

The Christmas program in Mt Hagen will now be an annual event.
