One of Northern Province’s pioneer Health Centers, has been given a facelift after years of neglect by successive governments.
Saiho Health Center serves the Central Kaiva area and has been struggling to cater for patients with its run down facilities.
The renovation is funded by the Provincial Government and is a boost for the staff.
Saiho Health Centre is located in the Sohe District of the Northern Province.
It serves a population of 39 000 to 40 000 people in the Central Kaiva area.
Most of its facilities are rundown, but the provincial government is assisting to refurbish it.
Sister in Charge of the Health Center, Marcella Dikini, says it’s a sign of better days ahead.
Staff housing will also be given a facelift.
But there are still challenges faced by the health center. There are not enough facilities and shortage of manpower with only 13 staff attending to 50 to 100 patients daily.
Water and lighting is also a problem when attending emergency cases.
But there is hope that the generator will be installed in time to provide lighting for the health center.
The health center often deals with high cases of malaria, but the delay in drug supply from the area medical store, means it cannot effectively assist patients.
Despite all this, the staffs diligently serve the people, and hope the renovation of existing facilities will open doors for more assistance.
