Public Solicitor’s Office face Pending Eviction Notice

The Public lawyers were locked out of their office by Ray White Real Estate Agency, who manages the Garden City Offices.

According to the Agency’s statement, a total of K980,000 in over-due rent was owed for over an 8 month-period.

The Public Solicitor General, Jim Tamate, told EMTV that he had notified the Department of Finance on the pending eviction notice.

The office of the Public Solicitor represents the defendants or Citizens who require legal assistance in Court. Every day there is a case at the Waigani Court House whether committal, National or Supreme Court where lawyers from the Public Solicitor attend.

But they are not the only ones who are locked out, the Ombudsman Commission Office in Downtown Port Moresby has also been locked since last Friday.

EMTV understands other government offices renting may also be in the same situation.

Moreover, the National Institute of Statistics and Industrial Technology, the government arm to monitor technical standards, Metrology, conformity assessments schemes, productivity and technical barriers to trade, office has been closed for a month.

EMTV News is still waiting for a response from the Minister for Finance, James Marape.

The Finance Secretary, Dr Ken Nangan speaking to EMTV News explained it was a miscalculation from the 2016 budget.

The secretary asked the land lords to at least allow the office to be open as the department of finance has put 5million to pay for the outstanding rentals.

But an audit is expected before any payment can be made on the outstanding rentals.
