Popondetta Women’s Cricket Competition

Wander Hoods are the champions of the 2014 Popondetta Women’s Cricket Competition, following their superb on field performance.

Wander Hoods missed the services of all–rounder Sailosi Ambo, who was part of the Pacific MMI PNG Lewas team in Japan, but that didn’t stop them from bowling Mari Knights all out, falling short by 65 runs to win.

The small but sporting enthusiastic town of Popondetta was abuzz with cricket excitement during the grand final of the Popondetta Women’s Cricket competition.

This time, it was the women’s action that attracted everyone to the Independence Oval.

Mari Knights in red, under the watchful eyes of coach Barney Ambo, were a surprise package in the grand final against a much more fancied Wander Hoods in Blue.

Wander Hoods set the target of 112 runs to win after their 20 overs as they sent Mari Knights to bat. Mari Knights on the other hand, looked relaxed as they took up the task at hand.

Mari Knights took up the bat with confidence as they attempted to chase down Wander Hoods set target of 112. Scoring runs proved difficult for Mari Knights as Wander Hoods closed in with some outstanding fielding, sending opening batswoman packing.

Despite Mari Knight’s efforts to score quick runs between the wickets, another top wicket of Samantha Ambo succumbed to Wander Hoods bowling. Mari Knight’s big hitter Maylynne Yaruso performed below expectation, getting a duck.

The Ladies in Blue stuck to their game plan despite missing the valuable services of Sailosi Ambo, who was on international duties with the PNG Lewas in Japan. Mari Knights were all out for only 50 runs, falling short of 62 runs to win.

Wander Hoods Coach John Ambo, was a happy man.

Mari Knights on the other hand, remained happy with their grand final appearance and no doubt, will be aiming for that major title come the next season of the Popondetta Women’s Cricket Competition
