Popondetta Touch Footy Preparing For PNG Games

Sporting codes in Popondetta, Northern Province, are preparing for the upcoming PNG Games in Lae, later this year.

Touch Football has selected a total of 36 players, both male and female, to be on the train on squad. The team will be hoping to defend their gold medal in the open mix division.

Popondetta Touch Football has made a comeback after two years in the doldrums. So far, ten teams have registered to participate in the competition.

Competition is stiff as players vie to make the train on squad for the national championship, and the PNG Games this year. The code has enjoyed much success during the PNG Games, and has bagged three consecutive gold medals in the open mix division

While it’s open men’s division won silver in 2005, and bronze in 2011 PNG Games, Popondetta Touch Football Coordinator Botty Robinson, is optimistic of a better outcome in all divisions this year.

Mr. Robinson says the team will need K1.5 million to travel for the games. He says the provincial government will be subsidizing their travel.

Preparations are going smoothly and players on the train on squad, have been urged to be committed to their training, or will face exclusion.

Trainer Ronnie Oivo says, fitness and discipline are paramount.
