Manus Governor’s Cup football festival is heading into its business end with Pontes FC taking on Hawaii FC in the title decisder in Prince William Oval.
Kicking off on March 23rd, with a total of 41 all male teams the competition’s title decider is currently underway.
Competition director Kakau Karani said the competition is in its climax with Hawaii FC, CCR FC, PDT 1-7 FC and Pontes FC making the top four this year.
He said the tournament ran smoothly and they are excited to conclude the event on a high note.
“The tournament was all good, with no major complaints from teams. Except for small unnecessary complaints from 1 or 2 teams. Otherwise, all good since Monday, 23rd March till today,” Karani said.
He said current Manus Governor Charlie Benjamin will be announcing the grand prizes at the end of the tournament and players are also lucky to have PNGFA franchise Admiralty Island FC selectors on the ground to possibly scout talents.
“The prizes have not been announced yet by the major sponsor of the tournament and the governor of Manus,” Karani added.
“Yes, we have the Admiralty Island FC head coach and the assistant coach Kevin Knight on the ground doing the selection.”
The annual event has only men’s division this year unlike in the past where there are also women’s division.
The competition also aims to develop the game of football on the island to make it not only a one off event but to have a competitive sport. Currently there is no season competition that runs in the province. However, the interest is always high when it comes to short term tournaments like the current governor’s cup where players, families, fans and followers of the code flock.
The island football has been showcased through the semi-professional competition in the country through Admiralty Island FC and the competition managers are glad to see more local talent come through to revive the name of the province in the top arena like in the good old days.
