Police Minister, Robert Atiyafa, has revealed that there is an estimated five thousand, five hundred police personnel in the country.
His response comes after fighting around settlements, that caused Women and children to become homeless and claimed many lives.
He says these fights are warning signals and police capacity must be improved. The implications it has on the Police Service, is an on-going issue debated by the Public.
But, according to the Police Minister, plans to improve the service are in progress.
“ The Government has instructed my department to come up with eight to ten thousand policemen per year, “ he says.
Minister Atiyafa’s, comments come after settlement and school clashes around the country got worse in the last several weeks. Properties got burn down, making women and children homeless, and have some killed in the fight.
Last week, Lae Community leaders, called on the Police, churches and the Morobe Provincial Government, to hold a forum to discuss solutions.
It’s a burdened added onto a Police Service that’s already stretched out.
It’s understood that because of this big difference in the ratio of Police personal to the seven million people around the country, more Police personnel are to be trained by the Government, but the problems of housing also still linger.
