PNG to expect 42% reduction in wholesale internet price in 2020

Papua New Guinea is expected to see a 42 percent reduction in wholesale internet prices come 2020. This was announced yesterday in Port Moresby by PNG DataCo Commercial General Manager Une O’Ome.

Speaking during a pre-sale function to internet service providers, Mr. O’Ome said this will be made possible through the Coral Sea Cable System which according to Mr. O’Ome has been progressing well since its inception in 2014.

“We have reached a significant milestone with the laying of the Coral Sea Cable System. Once it is up, we will have over 1000megabyte per second (mbps) internet speed. This is 100 times over the current 35mbs,” O’Ome said.

With the current rate of K640/gigabyte in wholesale internet prices, the improved connectivity is expected to reduce that amount by almost 50%.

“With the improved connectivity, we will reduce the price to K350/gigabyte. This is almost 42% in reduction of the current price,” O’Ome said.
