The PNG Men’s and Womens National hockey teams, are set to embark on a gruelling next few months, as they prepare for the Oceania championships in October.
Today, the Port Moresby-based half of the national team, underwent a long morning session, with coach Manoi Pokiap, wary of the fact that the side will be facing both Australia and New Zealand.
With the Kookaburras and Black Sticks New already recognizable internationally, Pokiap is hoping that his side will prove competitive, citing the new turn facilities provided after the Pacific Games in 2015, a massive bonus for the side, who initially had had to adjust to international conditions prior to competing in these types of tournaments.
While half the squad is based in Lae, Pokiap has stated that he is looking to have those players join the rest of the team in the Nation’s capital, prior to finalising both an 18-man and 18-woman squad.
This one month ahead of the championships, with an added emphasis on youth, as well as of course, the current experience the team already has.
