Over 20 Injured in Hiritano Highway Accident

A road occurred last night along the Hiritano Highway has left over 20 injured, with two believed to have died.

It had happened between Martins and Veimauri outside Port Moresby at around 11pm.

The Kake Meta, a PMV heading towards Kerema collided head on with a semi-trailer.

When EMTV News arrived at the scene, images were captured of the wrecked vehicles; however, eye witnesses say the extent of the damage had caused serious injuries. Among the injured were women and children.

“We pulled out a lot of people from the wreckage, most of them were unconscious. I don’t know if they were alive or dead, but there was a lot of blood and people were seriously hurt,” said an eyewitness.

Meanwhile a third vehicle swung off the road when it tried to avoid the crash site. That happened hours after the initial accident.

“We tried to signal it to stop but it didn’t slow down. The vehicle came and swung off the road and rolled over the slope,” said an eyewitness.

The injured passengers were rushed to Port Moresby early this morning.

“It’s the start of the festive season, and drivers must stop this attitude of careless driving,” a road commuter said.
