A police officer from McGregor Police Barracks in Port Moresby was cut on his neck with a bush knife last night.
According to the NCD Superintendent Operations Perou N’Dranou, the policeman was attacked next to a beer shop.
The Superintendent did not specify the reason for the attack but it is believed that the fight is alcohol-related.
N’Dranou said the officer is currently being treated at the ICU Ward at Port Moresby General Hospital.
“The officer was slashed on his neck and cut on his left leg with a bush knife,’’ said N’Dranou. He said due to a quick response by police officers, much of the damage was prevented.
In the meantime, police officers from Gordon’s Police Station and the McGregor Barracks are at the scene to prevent more fights that are likely to happen between relatives of the policeman and those involved in the fight.
N’Dranou said the 9 Mile Market will be closed for an indefinite period until the situation is brought to normalcy.
“I am closing the market and all the beer shops in this area [to prevent] any further fights,” N’Dranou said.
