NCD leads in positive measles cases

OVER one hundred and thirty two children have been immunized since the nationwide measles vaccination program was rolled out.

NCD is leading the tally with 50 positive cases for the disease.

Western Province has the second highest number of positive measles cases with seven, and Central province with two.

According to NDoH’s Public Health Surveillance and Emergency Response, Program Manager, Berry Ropa, two samples from Rabaul, are now tested, at the Central Public Health Laboratory here in Port Moresby.

The onset of the current measles outbreak has seen schools covered in ongoing measles vaccination programs.

However, despite initial public assurances of the size and reach of the outbreak, there have been cases that have appeared outside of the NCD, prompting the vaccination program to go nationwide.

The national health department continues to urge all parents to bring their young children in for vaccination.
