The Enga Mioks recorded their first win of the season after defeating Rabaul Gurias, twenty points to six yesterday.
The Mioks put up a strong defensive play that stopped a lot of Gurias’ opportunities, all throughout the game. The Gurias, on the other hand, were not happy with most of the referee’s decisions. It was a game that brought in rugby league followers into the Lae rugby League grounds.
The Agmark Rabaul Gurias, after two consecutive wins against the Isapeas and the Lahanis respectively, were looking at making a third, however, a new-look Mioks side, comprising of mostly Ipatas cup products, were on a mission to stop the Gurias’ winning spree.
Mioks captain, Joe Kingal, led the way for his team, scoring two unconverted tries in the first half. Both teams put up strong challenges in the first half, to see the half-time score at 8 points to 6.
The start to the second half saw minor hiccups with the referee’s decisions.
Mioks were awarded a bevy of penalties, which saw them opt for conversions, to bring up their score to 12 points to 6.
Mioks centre, Charles Nakim, later crossed to give his team a comfortable 18 points to 6 lead. Gurias had a lot of opportunities, giving them glimpses of the Mioks try line, however a strong defense kept them at bay.
Minutes before fulltime, Mioks converted another penalty and extended their lead to 20 points to 6, a lead they held, till fulltime.
The Gurias will return to Lae this weekend to take on the Lae SNAX Tigers.
