Minister Marape Addresses Rural Development Staff

Finance and Rural Development Minister James Marape will be screening all the policy frameworks by the Department so people benefit from funds dispersed by the Government.

Minister Marape said Office of Rural Development (ORD) plays a vital role in the whole service delivery mechanism.

“Each and everyone one of you play a pivotal role in making sure rural communities benefit from the large sum of development grants allocated to the 111 districts of PNG,” said Minister Marape.

Minister Marape said a key agenda forward for ORD is to overhaul key policies so the 111 districts are held accountable for the funds allocated. Mr Marape also warned the staff to improve the image of PNG’s public service.

The Office of Rural Development is now amalgamated with Finance Department.

ORD Acting Secretary Aihi Vaki said the Department will provide the technical support through policies but also needs urgent attention in its operations.

Minister Marape was accompanied by Finance Secretary Dr Ken Ngangan and other senior officers.

Government must adequately fund physical audits by ORD to very and qualify District & LLG Acquittals vs respective budgetary allocations. That’s an important process in enforcing accountability of public funds in rural areas
