Staffs, students and the surrounding community of Mendi School of Nursing in the Southern Highlands Province, were proud recipients of a new basketball court over the weekend.
Bank South Pacific’s Mendi Branch carried out this renovation under its Community Project Scheme.
Local road construction company, Construct Oceanic, partnered BSP Mendi to deliver this project successfully.
This is BSP’s fourth project in the province since the Community Project Initiative was introduced to Mendi.
The basketball court has been in dire need of renovation following the tribal fight in 2002, that left this only tertiary institution in the province closed for the duration of the fight, and reopened in 2011.
The school was thankful to BSP for the assistance, which also came with accessories such as basketballs and umbrellas.
Mendi BSP Branch Manager, Billy Veveloga, thanked his staff for sacrificing their weekends to have this facility completed, and urged the school to look after the court.
BSP’s community projects are focused on health, education, sports and environment, and being the major sponsor of the 2015 Pacific Games, the basketball court will be a venue for talented Papua New Guineans to learn and improve their basketball skills.
The basketball court was then handed over to the school and the BSP management team opened the court with a few shoots.
