The first batch of medical volunteers engaged by the Pacific Games Organising Committee, are currently assisting the 6th BSP PNG Games medical team in Lae as part of their preparations for the 2015 Pacific Games.
Ten medical students are on the ground, attending to injuries sustained by the athletes. They have also been doing medical checks for the athletes to ensure that they are physically fit to take the field.
With less than 10 months to go before the opening ceremony, Games Organising Committee CEO, Peter Stewart feels that volunteers need to gain valuable experience in preparation for the 2015 Pacific Games.
The medical students are being supervised by Lae’s medical professional staff with assistance of the students’ medical instructor Dr. David Inaho.
Dr Inaho was pleased to see the students put into practice what they have learnt from the training conducted by experts from Australia Sport Medicine.
The training was conducted in Port Moresby with participants being awarded with level 1 certificates, which enables the medical students to provide sports medical assistance during the games next year.
Another group of ten students will travel to Lae this weekend to carry on from the current group who will return to Port Moresby.
