The people of Maprik now have improved banking services.
With the opening of the Maprik BSP Rural Branch, it can now serve the 6000 customers, who normally take a risky three hour ride, to Wewak to do banking.
Almost three quarters of the customers are small to Medium Enterprise owners.
Maprik District is dubbed by locals as the economic hub of the province.
Considered as Central Sepik, every day, people bring money into the District, from six other LLG’s in both East and West Sepik.
The people are mainly small to Medium Enterprise owners while others are subsistence farmers. With so much cash on hand, they take a three- hour drive to the Provincial capital of Wewak, to do banking.
This is often risky as sometimes, the people are robbed and harassed along the Sepik Highway.
With the opening of the Maprik BSP Rural Branch, it paves the way for convenient banking at their doorstep. 6000 customers will directly benefit from the improved service. It was an initiative of Maprik MP John Simon and local community leaders.
Maprik BSP Rural Branch was opened during Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill’s visit to the District recently.
Prior to the opening, East Sepik Governor Grand Chief Sir Michael Somare told the people that they must now make use of the banking facility.
So far, in Maprik, there are 14 BSP Agents, and one ATM. And for the first time, the people can sign up for Mobile and Internet Banking solutions.
