By Julie Badui Owa – EMTV News, Lae

Lae will be hosting a Flower and Garden Show to coincide with Mother’s Day from May 10 to 12 at the Lae Botanic Gardens. The purpose of the show is to assist in the promotion and development of the historic National Botanic Gardens that was established almost 70-years ago.

The event is organised by long term residents of Lae with the support of Lae’s based businesses houses, women’s flower groups and Lae District.

The Flower and Garden show is part of the Lae National Botanic Gardens Advancement Program. Aimed at improving the public use of the National Botanic Gardens through upgraded public grounds, infrastructure and security facilities.

The Show’s Chairlady, Anna Wissink, says the show will also help educate members of the public about PNG’s flora and fauna.

The National Botanic Gardens in Lae was established in 1949. It plays an important role in botanical research, conservation and recreational activities. The current gardens cover an area of approximately 56 hectares. After many years of closure to the public, it was recently reopened.

The PNG Forest Authority manages the Lae National Botanic Gardens. The Garden Curator, Michael Lovave, said they need new infrastructure in the Garden.

The First Lae Flower and Garden Show was hosted last year at the Lae National Botanic Gardens. This year, it will be held from the 10th to the 12th of May.

According to the Chairlady, almost twenty business houses are supporting the Friends of Lae Botanic Gardens to host the show.
