KEREVAT MARKET UPGRADE ON HOLD OVER LAND ROW

By Wasita Royal

Plans to upgrade the Kerevat market in Gazelle district remain stalled, with the provincial market authority awaiting land availability before construction can begin.

The facility, managed by the East New Britain Market Authority, is currently a temporary structure in Central Gazelle LLG. Gazelle district has the highest population in the province and serves as the main source of fresh produce, prompting calls for a proper and spacious market infrastructure.

ENBMA Chief Executive Officer Peter Lapim is now urging Central Gazelle LLG authorities and the district administration to fast-track the process.

He apologized to the people of Gazelle, acknowledging that despite the district being the province’s food bowl, the existing facility remains insufficient.

Meanwhile, Lapim confirmed that the Palmalmal market in Pomio district remains under West Pomio LLG management for now. He said it will be transferred to the market authority once the proposed township is established and the designated beachfront site is cleared.

Lapim stressed that local leadership support is critical to securing land for a larger market building, which he says is urgently needed to adequately serve Gazelle district’s growing population.
