Vendors at Kerema Market have voiced concerns about the current state of the market.
They said the market is very small and cannot cater for the increasing number of vendors with their produce.
As a result some sit along the pavement and, outside the market to sell their produce to customers.
The Kerema Market is the only lifeline Kerema people use to sell their produce to earn an income.
An influx of vendors arrive every day from distant parts of the province, with an abundance of their produce to sell in the market.
“Villagers travel long distances to sell their produce. They do not sit well because of limited space, and because of that, they sit on the ground to sell,” said Kerau Evoi.
Negligence by those in authority has left the market idle for number of years; this has affected locals who benefit economically from this important government service.
The location of the market could not allow for its extension, as vendors congregate along the pavement and outside the market to sell their produce.
Vendors said the state of the market has been a burden for them as they have been economically affected.
“Sometimes we sell out all our produce but other times when we do not sell all, we trash them away,” said Jacinta John.
They are now calling on their provincial leaders to maintain this important facility.
