Several people are dead and over 100 houses have burned to ashes following days of clashes between two clans in the Kainantu District of the Eastern Highlands Province.

It is understood that a dispute between the Tapo and Kainava clans escalated into violence.

This follows attempts by the district team at the Council Chambers to negotiate peace between the two villages regarding previous tribal fights.

The people of Kainantu District are calling on the government and their Member, Johnson Tuke, to send in law enforcements to help stop the fight as the number of casualties increase.

Sources told EMTV News that hand grenades were also used in the fight.

All business houses, in Kainantu Town, including the bank are closed.

The situation is very tense right now and PMV travellers and residents are warned to take precaution when travelling.
