A Hela community in Port Moresby has joined in the fundraising drive to provide relief support to their communities affected by the earthquake, two weeks ago.
The Hela Inaka Earthquake Relief initiative is led by mostly mothers and youths who gathered yesterday, and donated clothes and sold barbecue food.
A similar activity will be arranged this Sunday, the 18th of March at the Murray Barracks oval. Port Moresby Residents are welcome to attend and contribute donations for the affected communities.
On the occasion, a special commemoration activity will take place from 5pm to 7pm, to pay respect to the lives that were lost during the earthquake.
Leaders of Hela have also been extended an invite to attend.
The community gathered at 5mile yesterday with two aims; the first is the immediate relief response to provide food and clothing support.
The second aim is to contribute to restoring the affected communities with materials to rebuild houses and infrastructure that was destroyed by the earthquake.
Hela Inaka- Earthquake Relief Committee Member Cathy Pitzz says, they have been keeping in touch with their families at the village and they know exactly the number of people affected and what kind of relief assistance they need.
