Government Questioned about Disaster Relief Assistance

By Staycey Yalo – EMTV News, Port Moresby

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill and Finance Minister, James Marape, were asked a series of questions by MP’s of areas affected by the 7.5 magnitude earthquake and other natural disasters in Central Province.

The questions asked without notice related to when disaster relief assistance would reach certain areas of the affected provinces, and the amount of money the government of PNG itself has allocated for relief efforts, apart from support from donor partners and business houses.

Members of parliament, especially from the disaster affected areas were concerned about the speed at which the national government is responding to releasing funds to districts in order to help people on the ground.

North fly MP, James Donald opened the questions.

Prime Minister Peter O’Neill told parliament that the government has allocated K20 million directly to the districts for relief efforts, apart from the K59 Million given collectively by donors and business houses.

Wabag MP Dr. Tom Linu also raised a similar question directing to allocation of district funds by Rural Implementation and Finance Minister’s office.
