Goroka To Stage Third Coffee Cup Of Excellence

The PNG Coffee Industry Corporation (CIC) will stage its third coffee cup of excellence competition in Goroka next month.

The competition will see growers showcase the varieties of coffee samples and methods of roasters for judges to decide.

According to CIC’s Regulations and Compliance Manager Sam Menanga, the competition aims to promote sustainable production of quality coffee, support grower groups, promote marketing and empower growers to export coffee to specialty markets.

CIC provincial extension officers and groups have been advised to collect and provide 5 – 10 kilograms of parchment coffee. This event will also create an avenue for collected samples of actual coffee available for immediate arrangement for exports to niche markets.

The top five samples will be selected for the 2014 National Cup of Excellence Competition in September this year.

Morobe, Eastern Highlands, Chimbu, Jiwaka and Western Highlands Provinces are taking part in this year’s competition.

The competition will strictly comply with coffee samples collected from grower groups trained and involved in CIC Farmers Training and Extension programs and from recently recognized districts groups and cooperatives.
