Five Police Officers Arrested Over Murder of Civilian in Lae

Five Police officers serving in Lae’s Metropolitan Command have been formally arrested and charged with the death of the man whose body was found in Lae’s “Raun Wara”, two weeks ago.

The victim and two others were picked up by the officers at Kapiak Street in Boundary road, and were taken to the lake, where they were allegedly forced to swim across.

This resulted in the young man’s death, caused by drowning.

He was identified to be from the Chimbu Province.

Lae Police Boss Anthony Wagambie Jr. said the five officers have been charged with Deprivation of Liberty and Manslaughter.

Mr. Wagambie said whilst a police officer’s job is difficult to do, officers must maintain their professional conduct, stating that no one is above the law.

He is calling on Members of the Kapiak street settlement to allow the court process to progress.
