Since coming on board in 2011, Digicel continues to support PNGRFL and its efforts for a professional competition, to cater for the abundant pool of talented footballers in the country.
A cheque of K900, 000 was presented to PNGRFL General Manager, Hubert Warupi in Port Moresby today.
Mr Warupi said PNGRFL was proud to have Digicel support the code of Rugby League in the Country, and is assured that the game’s status will continue to grow.
The launch of the season also sees a change in the format of the competition due to the availability of facilities in Port Moresby. Most venues are undergoing refurbishment exercises to prepare for the 2015 Pacific Games.
The new format will consist 10 teams, divided into 2 pools. Pool A placements are based on 2013 standings of the Enga Mioks, Mendi Muruks, Hela Wigman, Hagen Eagles, and Port Moresby Vipers.
Pool B consists of Rabaul Gurias, Gulf Isapeas, Simbu Lions and Goroka Lahanis.
In the first 2 rounds, all teams will play against teams in their respective pools in a round robin format. Round three will see teams in the respective pools cross over to play against each other.
This will enable 8 teams to qualify for the finals instead of 5, and allows the game to be innovative, while increasing the prospects of new teams for the competition.
