Sinesine-Yongomul MP Calls on UN to Review the Definition of ‘Refugee’

The United Nations has been called on to relook at what constitutes a refugee.

Sinesine-Yongomul MP, Kerenga Kua claims the word refugee must be redefined, to prevent the chaotic situation on Manus Island.

Mr Kua sai dPapua New Guinea has been caught in an uncomfortable situation after volunteering to support the solution of the global community, through a bi-partisan approach with Australia.

Kerenga Kua who is a lawyer by profession said finger-pointing between Papua New Guinea and Australia has to stop.

Papua New Guinea volunteered to support the solution to this global problem subject to laws, treaties and regulations.

However, its now faced with more responsibilities and the United Nations must provide a limited definition of refugees to eliminate threats.

Kua explains threats to refugees are diminished once they flee to their neighbouring countries.

If they move further away, they should not be classified as refugees.

He said refugees should not be given the right to nominate their final destination.

A decision which rests solely with the host nation.

All these problems could have been avoided if only the word refugee was defined clearly.

This would allow countries like Papua New Guinea, Australia or Nauru to strengthen their monitoring and surveillance on the border and the type of visa to be granted.
