Business PNG – Episode 18, 2014

In this edition of Business PNG, we head to sunny Cairns for the 30th annual Australia-PNG Business Forum and trade expo.

“Opportunities beyond the boom”, was the timely theme for the forum, which welcomed Prime Minister, Peter O’Neill and his entourage of government officials, Australian minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop, as well as delegates from both the private and public sector of both countries.

While the opportunities were prominently highlighted, Mr O’Neill and the other speakers were also quite vocal about the challenges that the resource boom had placed for PNG.

Also on this episode, we consider the North Australia-Papua New Guinea trade zone. Seeing as Port Moresby is just over an hour’s flight from the nearest international airport in Australia; the Cairns International Airport in Queensland, trade and business ties between the two countries can be strategically positioned so that there is a win-win situation for both PNG and particularly the upper northern territories of Australia.

Talks have been underway to setup an economic zone that could facilitate the movement of people and goods freely between the two countries and stakeholders are eagerly anticipating it.
