Business PNG – Episode 15, 2014

In this episode:

Are manufacturers in PNG struggling? For several years, manufacturers in the country have been enjoying strong economic growth largely due to the construction phase of LNG project. Now that the construction phase of this billion Kina project is coming to an end, different sectors of the economy are starting to feel the pinch and the manufacturing sector is no different.

Despite a slow 2013, confidence still remains in this sector. SP Brewery, PNG's largest brewer, invested K150 million for expansions while Coca Cola Amatil PNG, had a budget of K230 million for their five-year redevelopment plan. These figures show how the manufacturing sector continues to grow, but whether the benefits outweigh the challenges is another question. Some even say that this sector is struggling, having being caught between high costs and unfair competition with importers.

Also in this episode, is the Autonomous Bougainville Government’s move towards strengthening its autonomy. Now that the Bougainville Public Service Act has been enacted, ABG can operate its own public service system, a task that was previously performed by Waigani. EMTV’s Fabian Hakalits reports on how the members of the autonomous government are taking on this new milestone achievement.
