PNG Professional Boxing Association is preparing for the September 10th tournament.
Elias Basa who will feature in the main event with Nelson Samson was privileged to secure a K2 000 Sponsorship, courtesy of Niugini Islands Insurance Brokers and Risk Consultants.
More than 10 fighters are expected to assemble in the boxing ring before facing off in their respective categories at the Sports Inn in Port Moresby next month. The event is deemed to take precedence over any other combat sport held in the country in the last 6 months.
President of PNG Professional Boxing Association Elwin Wafewa confirmed the event is on schedule.
“In this tournament we are bringing in international referee form Australia Brad Borgoley. The purpose of bringing an international Referee such as Borgoley is to make an appeal for PNG Pro Boxing to the World Boxing Organisation (WBO) in the international scene so pro boxers have a dream to move forward” said Wafewa.
The highlight of the event however will see Elias Basa and Nelson Samson going head to head in the middle weight division.
“The main bout will see kick-boxer Nelson Samson and pro boxer Elias Basa facing off for the ultimate showdown” added Wafewa.
Basa has now secured a timely sponsorship package of K2 000 from Niugini Islands Insurance Brokers & Risk Consultants.Niugini Islands Insurance Brokers & Risk Consultants representative Dennis Kana said Elias wrote to the managing director seeking support and they responded accordingly.
“As a PNG company in terms of sports, we’d like to help young people realize their goal in life through sports instead of involving in unwanted practice in their community so we are happy to do this sponsorship” said Kana.
Basa’s manageress Clara Momoi thanked Niugini Islands Insurance Brokers & Risk Consultants for the making it possible for her fighter to take the stage in September.
“Elias has a good record in both armature and professional boxing and I am sure he will continue on with his boxing career “said Momoi.
Like every professional boxing match that involves money and sponsorship deals Momoi admits her fighter still need financial backing in his feature bouts.
“If any organization wants to sponsor in the future as well as further support to Elias’s September fight I welcome any support in this regard” Momoi added.
The Bougainvillean now has a manageress but still in pursuit of a promoter to complete his team while building up for this fight. “I am sure Elias Basa will rock the stage in September and his playing the main bout” Momoi concluded.
Other major sponsors including Trophy Haus who sponsored the event for the second time with trophies, boxing equipment’s and other merchandise while Sports Inn providing the venue.
The tournament has drawn fighters from other parts of PNG to compete, such as Solomon Tiamani who flew in from Milnebay to train in Port Moresby ahead of the event.
The event will be held on September 10th with the tickets already out on sale at any Trophy Haus outlets in Port Moresby for just K10.
