An asylum seeker was reported dead at the East Lorengau Asylum Processing Centre in Manus today.
Provincial Police Commander, Chief Superintendent David Yapu who confirmed the incident, said he will be releasing an official report on it soon.
However, details particulars of the refugee have been withheld.
Following this report, the UN Refugee Agency released a statement saying, “such tragedy highlights the acute vulnerability of refugees and asylum-seekers under Australia’s “offshore processing” approach, and the need for proper care”.
Meanwhile, 31st of October has been selected by the Courts as the date of closure to close of the Regional Processing Centre.
