Over six hundred students attending Tavui Primary School in the Rabaul Electorate, East New Britain Province now have a chance to learn more about the different cultures of Papua New Guinea and the neighbouring Melanesian countries.

New Guinea Islands (NGI) Regional Sales Manager, Robin Taman and Marketing personnel Ronnie Toure (pictured) represented the airline last week; in donating several boxes of books containing information and pictures on the different cultures and traditions of the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Papua New Guinea. The books were part of ANG Marketing’s Promotional material.

Mr Taman said culture and tradition provide people with a sense of identity, purpose and belonging, hence it was important for students to learn about the various cultures in Papua New Guinea and fellow Melanesian countries. He also said most importantly, the availability of books ensure children become engaged and are motivated to read.

“Reading culture is very important and if we want to see that happening at schools, we must encourage students to become engaged and motivated readers. I hope the presentation of these books from Air Niugini will go a long way to help the kids in this school with their reading and learning.” Mr Taman said.

Tavui Primary School Principal Mrs Cecelia Tapil, said they were grateful and excited about the donation; adding that it was the first time for their school to receive such a donation for their library.

She said the donation was timely, because it coincided with the school’s current Teaching and Learning Benchmark – Reading Cultures curriculum.

Mrs Tapil said “We thank Air Niugini Marketing Department for choosing our school as we really need these materials for our current curriculum and these books would go a long way to help our children.”

Tavui Primary School has a total 611 students and 24 teachers. The students are from eleven (11) villages in the Rabaul District including Tavui one, two and three, Nonga, Volavolo, Ratavul, Rabaul Town, Vunairoto, Tavana, Korere and Matupit.

Air Niugini made similar donations to schools and libraries in Port Moresby and other centres.
