Abbott Meets O’Neill

by Theckla Gunga – EM TV, Port Moresby

A recent meeting between the prime ministers of Australia and Papua New Guinea revealed an insight into the Regional Resettlement Arrangement (RRA) of the Regional Processing Centre for asylum seekers in Manus.

The meeting held yesterday brought to light that the lack of understanding and support for the refugees’ settlement in PNG communities has prompted Prime Minister O’Neill to step in.

O’Neill said he has instructed that a new policy be prepared with increased focus on consultation and building public awareness and support.

“The new policy will be considered in cabinet after this comprehensive public awareness and consultation are completed,” said O’Neill.

He assured the Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott that PNG is committed to the implementation of the RRA.

He said the policy requires time to work through this issue given its sensitivity.

O’Neill added that due to an unfortunate incident at the processing centre, measures have been taken to improve security and management of processing.

“There is now improved coordination between the PNG Immigration and Citizenship Servicers Authority (ICSA), police and centre security, installation of CCTV cameras and the registration status determination is processing well”, said O’Neill.
