Four women are reported to have died from water and food shortage in the Kerema District of Gulf province, a local told EMTV News.
Simon Kedolo, a Kerema man working with the Kerema District Administration said since July, locals in Kerema have been struggling with the effects of El Nino.
“Three women and a young girl have died because of the shortage and I personally do not want to see more people die because of this dry weather,” Mr. Kedolo said.
He said over 200 villages in Kerema have low food and clean water supply and over 47,000 people are being affected.
“More people are suffering from the effects of El Nino in Gulf, and I want to make a public appeal to concerned authorities to assist my people with food supplies,” Kedolo said.
Over 500 rice bags were been delivered to some villages during 22 helicopter trips into rural Kerema, however, other areas continue to remain without food and clean water supply.
