Oro Province Receives Justice Support Package From Aus Gov’t

Logistics is a major hindrance to delivering family and sexual violence services and support to remote communities in the country.

Australian High Commissioner to PNG, Deborah Stokes and her delegation, visited the Oro Province recently and delivered a justice support package worth K450, 000.

There to receive the package was Sohe MP and Minister for Community Development, Youth and Religion, Delilah Gore.

Due to logistical shortfalls and lack of government services in the river and coastal communities, law enforcers find it difficult to bring family and sexual violence support to the people.

Law enforcers and members of the provincial government thanked the Australian government for the continuous support in bettering the people’s lives.

Since 2009, Australia has supported and established 14 Family Sexual Violence (FSV) units in 12 provinces. These units have reported almost 28, 000 survivors of family and sexual violence.

Australian High Commissioner to PNG, Deborah Stokes, handed over 2 boats and a vehicle to assist the Oro Provincial Police Command, the Oro Provincial Village Court Office and the Popondetta Police Family and Sexual Violence Unit to conduct operations and inspections to river and coastal communities.

This is part of the K450, 000 justice support package. The Australian delegation extended their visit to Kebara village where the commissioner opened a K300, 000 refurbishment to the Kebara Aid Post.

This small facility provides specialty services such as family planning, quality maternal, HIV and AIDS counselling, tuberculosis, malaria and child health.

Over 1, 000 people will benefit from this facility. On the day, Members of provincial and local level governments were full of praise for the Australian government.

They said for services as such, it was rare for the national, provincial and local level governments to respond promptly.
