Karate-Do In PNG

It was full-on sparring as we caught up with them at the South Pacific Motor Club in Port Moresby over the weekend.

The 62-athlete train-on squad was training under the watchful eyes of sensei Trevor Roberts, a Queenslander who has more than 40 years of experience in the code of Karate.

Sensei Roberts has been the mentor of the three coaches including Sensei David Wallace, Sempai Willie Leslie for kata and speed, and Sempai Bernard Soari for fitness and video analysis.

The athletes came from different parts of the country and from different karate clubs including Kyokushin Karate from New Ireland and Shotokan Karate Budokai, based here in Port Moresby.

Some of the athletes have already booked themselves spots to represent PNG in the Melbourne Open Karate and Queensland Summer Karate Championships.

Following the international tours, the PNG Karate-do Federation has confirmed two main national tournaments.

The 8th PNG Karate Titles and the National Karate Championship will be hosted in Port Moresby in April and July. This will follow several training and an instructor’s seminar as well.
