MV Shuntien: Swire Shipping’s New Vessel

Swire shipping yesterday held a vessel naming ceremony to welcome its fifth ship that sailed in from Asia earlier this week.

The ship is the two hundred and sixth vessel built by the China Navigation Company, a deep sea ship owning and operating arm of the multi-national Swire group.

Lady Winifred Kamit was the official lady sponsor of the vessel and officiated the ceremonial champagne-bottle smashing.

The ship weighing 31 thousand tonnes is one of the newest vessels in Swire Shipping’s multipurpose liner fleets.

MV Shuntien is almost 200 meters long, the size of two football fields put together, and can carry a wide range of cargo including dry and refrigerated container, steel and forest products, heavy lift plant machinery, equipment and project parcels as well as agriculture commodities and minor bulk parcels.

General manager of Swire Shipping, Chris Daniells said in 2015, MV Shuntien and its other counterparts will be joined by another series of ships called the–Chief Class, designed for the Australia to PNG trade.

Daniells also added that all ships owned by Swire shipping are crewed by Papua New Guineans seafarers, and the company is working closely with the Maritime college in Madang to develop the next seafarers.
