A Special Melanesian Spearhead Group leaders’ summit in Port Moresby has welcomed West Papua to be part of the MSG.
On behalf of the forum chair, Prime Minister Peter O’Neill, however, clarified that consultation would have to be done with the Indonesian Government first.
Mr. O’Neill said this is to ensure cordial relations continue with Indonesia.
The special Melanesian spearhead group leaders’ summit with the exclusion of Fiji, saw the attendance of MSG Chairman in New Caledonia’s Victor Tutugoro.
Prime Minister of Solomon Islands, Gorden Darcy, Foreign minister of Vanuatu, Sato Kilman, and Prime Minister of Vanatu, Jonny Koanapo.
Conclusions reached from the meeting included deliberations on West Papua’s application to become a member of the MSG. But the conditions included having consultations with Indonesia first.
The Secretary General position was vacant with two candidates being looked at, PNG being one of them.
A visa free Melanesia is also an agenda for the MSG.
The special MSG leaders’ summit coincides with the Melanesian Arts and culture festival that will officially begin this coming Saturday.
